I started grinding my ring gaps but noticed the spring in the oil control ring doesn’t want to compress at all by hand. They are Mahle .020 pistons stock bowl, chrome top ring.

Do you guys ever trim the spring that holds the oil control ring ?

I've not seen the spring trimmed. Even when I had to use +040 rings in a +020 bore I did not need to trim the spring.

I called Mahle. The guy said that I shouldn’t be able to compress the oil ring by hand. He was telling me to run the middle ring with a wider gap than the top ring though.

What would you guys recommend for gaps ? The book I’m using is for a military crane truck with a p pump 12 valve. It says .016-.028” top ring, .010-.022 middle and bottom ring.

I also read somewhere to add .003” gap per .01” over bore

Just a stockish build for an older power wagon , 5x12s , 215 pump, ats 3000
