Somewhere between calling a friend, and my torque wrench my oil pump bolts got torqued to 38lb/ft instead of 18lb/ft.

Im guessing because of the gap between the pump and the block this is crushing the rubber gasket too much.

Will in need to replace the gasket when I pull the pump again to torque to the correct specs?

Thanks

there is a rubber gasket that has 2 small screws holding it to the pump.

heres a pic i found on google. its like a hard rubber/plastic that hits the block when you tighten the bolts.

I've rebuilt alot of 5.9, more than i can remember. And i never saw that gasket in any gasket kit that i got from Cummins.

I'm not sure, that was a pic from google, just searched for cummins oil pump and went to images, and looks exactly like my pump.

Either way its back together now, thanks for the help.

If that was a material other than steel it would press into the gear and get torn into shreds. It's only there to hold the pump gear in place during assembly.

It's all steel. Mine went in tonight with red loctite and > 50 ft/lbs.
