When a person says that their turbo is a 62/80, or a 66/76...What does each number represent?

I'm gonna guess:

The first number:62 or 66 in this case, refers to the compressor wheel "Inducer" size. (The part that you can see from the front of the turbo inlet)

The second number: 80 or 76...does it refer to the turbine "Inducer" size as well????

Sorry...just doing some measuring, and it ain't makin sense yet...:bang:hehe:

Ok, I have that saved from a while back already...but I'm still confused...

Example #1: GT2871R turbocharger (Garrett part number 743347-2) has a compressor wheel with the below dimensions. What is the trim of the compressor wheel?

Inducer diameter = 53.1mm
Exducer diameter = 71.0mm

They call this a 2871 turbo....whats the 28 for?
This seems different again, because the 71mm is on the Exducer of the compressor wheel, not the inducer, and is the second number, not the first...as in a 62/70
:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang

Do different companies use different methods??

turbo definitions

the first 2 digits are the frame size in ur case 28 thats considered a small framed turbo compared to 53 the larger the frame size the larger the turbine wheel. the next 2 digits in ur case 71 refer to the compressor wheel exducer in mm. any #'s after that can be r or s. r stands for ballbearing. and s stands for high flow applications hope this helps this applys to garrett turbos, diffrent manufacurers use diffrent definitions.

Thanks for the reply, but it seems the turbos everyone uses for the 6.0L are like a 62/70, or a 62/80, or, in my case, a 66/76.

In every case, the first number is the inducer of the compressor wheel, just not too sure about the second number. And then you would still need to know the A/R ratio to figure out the actual measurements of both wheels.

if it's a garrett gt series turbo the first #'s are allways the frame size. are these turbos gt's

You bring up a good question extended. I've been wondering about this also. I'm thinking about putting on II's 62/70 this winter and was wondering what other chargers are equivalent to this? Such as Turbonetics 61mm with the .68 turbine housing, would this be the same or equivalent as the II 62/70? So would that make the turbonetics a 61/68 then? Just wondering what companies turbo's are equivalent to other companies turbos.

how is the exhaust side specified in the #s...?
and can you just look anywhere on a turbo to see what size it is...? thers an old detroit engine with a bigarse turbo on it here at work thats just been rebuilt and sitting in a building....:evil:hehe:

please explain ur ignorance::charger:

I believe what he was saying is that most of the time when a person posts and says they have a 62/71 turbo, they dont know what it means either. Hence why he said "More often than not, the person posting cant tell you". Meaning they dont know either they just know thats what it is

Well I was told my turbo was a 66/76, but after measuring it up...it's different.
Yes, it is a 66mm compressor, but I don't think Brian Bunting wants this combination let out yet, so...that's all I gotta say.

I was just trying to make some sense of it all...

Judging by the turbo's he has sold a few people I know, he does not have a clue either.

Ok, well....I haven't tried his turbo yet, so how about we wait for MY FEEDBACK on MY TURBO, instead of slammin it right off the getgo??:thankyou2:

please explain ur ignorance::charger:

Tim's ignorance is a lot lower than you might think. Don't let the ginger look fool ya, he knows a few things about turbo's and diesels. His comment was, as said earlier, meant that few folks that post that they have a a XX/XX turbo knows what it means. I have a 65 MM thats all I know. MY ranger has two, and I don't even know anymore what they are, and couldn't tell you what they were even if I did know.

Im not slamming your turbo, I hope it works well for you. Im saying that more than a few people have been sold "special turbos" from him that were so far off what they wanted it was laughable. And after 9 months of phone calls, more excuses than I can remember and 3 smoked torque convertors from trying to spool said turbos, he got about a third of what he paid for it by selling it on a forum.
