When I'm driving without a load my temp gauge stays at 190. When I'm towing it will shoot way past the 190 mark and almost hit 240. I never had this problem before what could be the problem.

Check over flow bottle for your crank case breather, a lot of times it will get in radiator and cause over heating problems.

T-stats are supposed to be big issues with these trucks. Might start there, my 2 cents!

I have seen a couple of radiators out of trucks that would shock the heck out of ya. They were so plugged with bugs, dirt and seeds that it was a miracle it cooled things at all.

this is what was wrong with mine, check and see how much grease and road chit is in front of your fan mine was bad. you'll be surprized how much will come out if this is your problem i used coil cleaner soaked it down came back a while later hosed everything off it worked great for mine

Check your radiator for soaked/ then dried up cardboard. Many of us like to put card board in front of the radiator in the winter to keep these warm. Ironically these have more of a problem over cooling then over heating. Make sure your fan is drawing tons of air too, it should feel like a borderline vacuum in front of your truck even idling. I knocked my fan off my 98 and 02 and still never had over heating issues.
