What are you guys torqueing the nut on the pump shaft to when you time your pumps? I torqued mine to the 140 ft lbs spec yesterday and the first time I stood on the throttle the gear slipped and retarded the timing badly. I'm gonna retime it tonight just wondering if there is a better spec.

Clean the shaft plenty. I have an adjustable gear and put it to 160. It makes me nervous torqueing to that everytime.

I timed it by myself when the new motor was on the ground and might have gone a little bit fast on it. So i'm not entirely sure it got torqued right the first time. Will the stock gear take 160 or should I leave it around 140.

i think somewhere it is said 145. ive gone 150 but like they said will make you nervous. but the shaft and gear must be perfectly clean and dry or it will slip everytime good luck.

Take a scotchbrite pad and "scuff" the shaft when you clean it too...go lengthwise, not around the shaft. It will make small scratches in it that if you clean the gear the same way will "lock" them together better. Thats how I did mine... though I haven't started it yet, so I guess we'll see if it works, lol.

I had the same problem, only my timing slipped 3 times. I even took out the pump to scotch brite the pump shaft and the gear then i torqued the nut to 180 or so. I have an aftermarket heavy nut though. IT slipped again. the problem was finally solved by buying a new $16 washer. i will never reuse a washer again. My timing slipped so far it would not run and had to be towed by my friends power stroke, very embarrassing.

Good call on the washer I completely over looked that. I have timed my truck three or four times and never had a problem with it. I'll put a new washer on as well. Thanks

I have had good luck with 150 lbs went over that once before and rounded the nut off on the end of the shaft ... was not good turned into a 2 day fix
