p1689 code on '99

Hey, I'm new to this, so please bear with me.

I just pulled a p1689 code from my 99 dodge, and was wondering what to check next before assuming a bad injector pump. The pump has about 20,000 miles since being replaced along with new lift pump and filters about every 5000 miles. The truck just died, and while checking, the lift pump wasn't working. I checked all the fuses and swapped relays, but still no lift pump. I then checked for voltage @ lift pump connector with a led test light(beside the road, lol) and nothing on either terminal. Would a 1689 code cause the lift pump to not work?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jerry

It's a loss of communication between the ECM and VP. Most of the time it's the VP, but it can also be the ECM or engine wiring harness. Going to have to eliminate them one by one. Might want to start by checking the battery connections.

ecm

right, I understand checking these, but would this cause the lift pump to not get voltage?(bad ecm or vp) If it is wiring, that could cause both problems, but could no LP volts be electronic due to code and ecm shutting LP off?

Also, any good wiring diagrams out there??

I just had the same problem come home one day n luckily when it desided to
die i was in the drive way pulled the code and got 1689. i put 3 vp's and it
still wouldnt start finally i called colombus and the told me hot wire the vp
so i did n it fired rite up. so then i took the fuel pump relay out and swaped
it with the horn relay and it fired . so all it was was the relay so u may
wana double check that b4 u go swapping vp's. the bad part is the lift pump
was running w the bad relay

Hotwire?

By hotwire the vp, do you mean connect the 12 volt supply wire on the vp terminal 7, to batt. positive

yes and connect pin 36 to the negative on the battery n sthen start to see if it is the vp

You can hotwire the VP direct to see if it runs or not.

Another easy thing you can do is to swap an ECM if you can find one to use, just to see if it runs or not.

fixed?

sorry not pin 36 pin 6 my bad

I don't know if I mentioned the 0336 code (crank sensor) but I replaced Crank sensor and lift pump started working, bled injector lines and it started and runs fine. I don't know why the other code was set unless it was due to no fuel to IP or an intermittent problem that hasn't resurfaced yet.

Thanks for the advice.

Jerry
