Hello Everyone! I have what I believe to be a Perkins 354 turbo. it was swapped into a 79 F250. the engine is painted blue so I'm wondering if it is the marine version. Ive been searching the net for as much info as I can but just can't seem to get complete info. the engine starts but has a lot of white smoke. does this sound like a pump timing issue? it has a lucas CAV DPA pump on it. My next question is Ive read a Holset H1C is a good upgrade for the original turbo would you guys agree? or is there a better option like the HY35 ect.? last question is how do you turn up the CAV pump? seen a lot of post about it but no real complete how to's. any help would be awesome i can get pics and serial #'s if need be. Thanks

Doing some more research last night I discovered the pump is a hydraulic governed. And according the ID # it's originally a non turbo engine. But has a turbo added

Be Careful as the non turbo has no piston coolers.... Keep boost below 10 psi or Cyl...score I had one in a dodge for 5 years.....

How do the piston coolers work? Could I swap to turbo head or retrofit a cooler system? And now for a real newbie question.. how do you check compression on a diesel ? Pull the injector? The block code is 354U152904 according to my research the code will have a T at the end for turbo engines.

Piston cooler should be in the block not the head. They spray engine oil on the pistons.
