Is it at all common for piston rings to fail? A friend of mine has an 02, 40/3B, mach4's. TST/smarty etc... When he goes for a hard run and then lets off, the truck will coast for a while and then blow out a large puff and it smells STRONGLY of oil.. The 40 was checked out by a shop and is fine. The 3b hasn't been checked by a shop yet, but it feels tight and there is no residue in the exhaust pipe after a hard run. He's thinking the only other two options would be valve guides or rings... Anyone have any experiance with this type of thing? He's on the board so I'm sure he'll see your response and have some answers for any other questions you might have.

Im currenty trying to get ahold of a leak down tester to try and track down the culprit. I dont think its in the valve trane tho, it dont smoke at an idle and cant get to smoke decelerating down a hill whitch it common for guide wear. Ive checked all the seals and they are intact but really donno until I do the leak down.

I've seen the same symptoms when the guides were shot or the head was cracked.
