i'm lookin at a 98 24 valve cummins and its not runing right and want to see what you guys think or know whats wrong. The truck starts hard and we you try to give it gas the WAIT TO START light comes on and dies out. You gota let the truck warm up and then it runs fine. What could it be???? The lift pump is new. Computer or injection pump?? help or call me 1920-765-1615
 
I have a 02 and my truck started this three days after i bought it. I could crank it and try to go but the thing would almost die when i give it some throttle. It would come alive at about 140 degrees. Took it to the shop with no codes, and come to find out the injection pump was shot at 89,000 miles. With 2 months and 11k left on the warranty,and for the first time luck was on my side.
 
check the grid heater like someone said but by looking at the number are you from wi? its been warm i am surprised it would even need the wait to start
 
see if someone around you has the cummins vp stand alone starter box, if its still a hard crank and dies at high idle then you know it the injection pump as this tool isolates the injection pump "brain".
 
heater grid runs on its own wiring dont really see how it could kill the truck unless the alternator stalls the truck? maybe check your coolant temp sensor on the off chance it pulls down the 5V circuit when cold?
