I can't remember how much higher to leave the main caps than the pan rail. .015-.020? Or am I way off? What does everyone do to get a consistent initial height measurement off the cap before machining? A straight edge and dial indicator or is there a better way?

I like the main cap spacers .001-.003" above the block deck and use a precision straight edge to depth mic down to the main caps from the block rail.

I ended up measuring my old block and it was right around .003 so that is what I shot for. This block was a real bear because some of the caps were not parallel to the pan rail so I had to do some shimming when I milled them off. I ended up between 0 and 4 thou protrusion on all the caps so I am happy with that.
