I am looking for a programmer for my 99'. Just looking for opinions on what to get. I dont plan on stacking it with anything right away, just looking for some good bang for the buck performance on something cheap. I thinking Superchips, Diablosport, Hypertech(ughh) or something else cheap(and probably out-dated..lol)Would prefer a programmer over a module. Also something that won't trash my stock trans right away, I just rebuilt it about 10k miles ago.

Ditto on the Smarty.

Any downloader (programmer) will only be capable of about 60-70hp.

Its not the HP you should be after. Its the additional options.

You can pick up a used Smarty for about $450-$500.. Not bad!

It's got more power levels (some with timing, some without), adjustable speed limiter, adjusts the speedometer/odometer. And alledgedly they are finally coming out with new tunes after 4+ years.

I'm not sure what your looking for limited... Although BBD didn't get into the details, he is pretty much right on.

With any of these programmers, your going to get a couple of functions:

1: More horsepower (up to about 65 max)
2: Possible speed limiter removal (for sure on the Smarty)
3: Possible tire size modification (for sure on the Smarty)
4: Better fuel economy? (The Smarty has a specific setting for this)

They do similar things. Its the HOW they do it. I drive a 6-speed, and I'm 100% satisfied with the Smarty and every function it offers. Others (mostly with automatics) have had surging problems.

In my humble opinion, the Smarty is the hardest fueling option available. I don't have dyno sheets to prove it, so take that with a grain of salt. The Smarty also offers 9 different settings for you to custom tune your vehicle to your wants/needs. It is also the best (once again, opinion) for future modifications. You can choose timing or no timing depending on which wire-tap box interests you (for example, I run Smarty #9 with my Blue Chip FMS: I let Smarty do all the timing. If I had an Edge Comp I would run Smarty #8: Similar program without the timing so as not to cause havoc with the Edge/Smarty timing combining.)

Once again... They all do similar things. The Smarty just does more of them, and arguably it does many of them better.

Do you have an auto or manual? The one thing I liked about the smarty was the anti-lug feature on the manuals. It keeps the rpms from dropping on takeoff for a smoother launch. You can take off in third by just letting out on the clutch pedal easy.

I have an auto, does the smarty quicken up shifts, increase line pressure, etc? Also anyone ever heard of the Jvd Torque Enhancer? Theres one on ebay right now...

In the 6 years I've been around the forums I've never even heard of that box. I'd steer away from it.

I had a smarty loved it for a while, then I grew up and sold it! Also it eats auto trannys. Why do you want a programmer only?

My truck did that stock, without ever having a Smarty...:poke:

smary will stop the torque mangement. anything else is a waste of money. stacks good. lots of adj. code reader.tire speedo calbrator, and if you hop up the truck and still have the torq man you wont be able to launch it or pull it and youll end up with one anyways. i was on the fence for yrs and i shoulde got one sooner...
