I know idling around is not recommended for breaking in a new diesel motor, but what is the recommended process for seating the rings and head gasket? I have heard fire it up and put a easy few clicks on it to make sure nothings going to fall apart, then load it up with some weight in the bed and make the truck really work, some others have told me to take it a little easier, and of course limit idle time.

Personally over on cumminsforum I've seen said more than a few times. To drive it like you said. Then load it down and take it for a good haul

ok sounds good, do I have to prime the oil system? I used assembly lube while building the motor, but I don't see any way of priming the system

About the only way to prime the system is to replace the oil pump and modify the old one to be driven with a drill.

I did it and its very handy, with it is very easy to prime the oil system after repair.

I let it warm up to check for leaks, run around the block to check again, then attempt to blow it up by going WOT as often as possible.

Most important is to break the cam in right away if it's new too. Fire it, check for oil pressure and any major leaks, then high idle it above 1500rpm for 15-20 min. Shut down. Check for any leaks. Then road test.

could you not just unplug the fuel solonoid and crank until you see oil coming out from the rocker arm?

I ran mine to break in the cam like recommended, put enough miles on it to break in the clutch, then hooked it to to the heaviest thing I could find, which was a sled. :hehe:

The best engine break in procedure is to crank it up with no water, run it at 1800-2200 rpms for about 5 minutes. Then your done. Rings are seated and cam is broken in. This is how just about every big engine builder I have ever talked to does it. I've been doing all my life with no failures. These diesels are a little more forgiving than the BBC's I used to mess with.

X2. Except I do it for 10 mins. But hell if 5 mins works ill just do that.

I used to do it until the outside of the engine was hot, usually about 15-20 minutes. But on the diesels, I cut the time down to 10, then 5. 5 minutes has been enough for them. Longer isnt gonna hurt anything either.

Turns out the small gear on the oil pump will just press right out of the oil pump. Now to just weld a bolt to the front of the drive gear.

All I did was pull the drive gear off and weld a 1/2in drill bit end to it, I did also press the smaller gear off at first but found out oil comes out of the hole if you don't have it in the oil pump housing. Works like a champ and simple
