I know this has been discussed.
What is the proper method of welding a D80 carrier?????

Right now I am planning (unless someone on here changes my mind):bang to heat the carrier up to around 300* then weld the spiders to the side gears. I will make sure the temp stays up. Then I will weld the gears to the housing.
I will then put the carrier in the oven and allow it to cool as slow as possible.

I will use .035 bare wire to weld it.

Give me your input.

Thanks
Adam

stick in over to 300 deggress, tig it, and let cool naturally

Put it back in the oven with the oven off to let it cool.

Like zstroken said....Don't let it cool off quickley...put it back in the oven after welding it and let it cool over night!

if u are going to tig it it needs to be super clean before welding be sure to use a weed burner to burn off oil that may have penetrated into the weldament as preheat. and let cool slowley u can use er80s-6

When I used to do my 12 bolts in my Chevy's years ago I would cut small pieces of steel to put in between the spider gears and also weld them in for added strenght/support.
Would that be necassary when welding a D80??

you can also use a bucket of sand to cool them down, i have also used filler metal to make it stronger, you just got to know where and how to weld it in.....

I had it apart and cleaned it all up with solvent, then put it in our big parts wash cabnet here at work. So it was as clean as I could get it. My wife was working last night LOL so I preheated the oven to 300 and stuck it in there for 45 min. Brought it downstairs and welded the crap out of it. It actually welded pretty good. I then put it back in the oven on 300 for 30 min then shut it off. I had to turn the fan on and open the house to rid of all the smoke oops. The pizzas are going to taste like 80 90. It was still warm to the touch this am. I hope it is good. I plan on needle peening it to rid of all the dog turds from the welding.

I steel need that 70HD detroit.

My detroit! well it has a small problem. the bearing on the ring gear side was loose. I dont know why, dont look like it was spinning. It measures .008 smaller than the side I had to pull the bearing off. I priced a new case and about $hit myself. $557. You can buy the whole damn thing for that. So called detroit. They recomended to machine it down .030 and press a sleeve on and machine the sleeve to the correct size. So I will be fixing it, I dont want to sell someone a problem. The guts look brand new thou.
