I was intalling a new head gasket/fire ring set-up and pulled the front two studs out on the final torque. ARP 12mm @ 125 ft-lbs. Does the head have to be pulled to install helicoils? Also, what size helicoils and who carries them?
I would imagine that its going to be extremely hard to do heli-coils right with the head in place.... I know how bad it sucks to fish out a broken stud with the head on and would think drilling and tapping for a heli-coil would be hard to do right without getting all kinds of fine shavings in your threads.
I cleaned it with q-tips to get all of the junk out of it. Previously the gasket blew out at the front. I'm thinking now that these holes were stripped out before I got the truck. I just recently got it.
The studs had been used before and they fit with all the threads going into the block so I did not see a reason to bottom tap again. I ran them in and then backed them out a fractional amount.
