pulling hitch question

alright so I have a little concern, I have a DMI Quic-Cushion II brand bumper and I was reading today in my DHRA rulebook, that "reese style" hitches are only allowed? and "trick" hitches are prohibited. what exactly do they mean by "trick" hitches...and since my DMI is not reese style, would I have to change this to be legal..??

Also, I will be pulling hopefully next season in Illini State Pullers, not sure if anyone from Illinois might be able to let me know if they allow DMI's. it would be nice to know, cuz I love the bumper, but I'd rather be "allowed" to pull at DHRA and ISP events.

And if no one knows what a DMI is or looks like...
here's a link with some good info.

I'm not an expert, but where would you put the clevis/ring? And before you say the pin through the hole mounted vertically, i want to say you would probably bend the drawbar...And, the mounting point can't move horizontally or vertically per rules, so I think that would DQ it also...

The hitch would be stationary because it locks into place. If the rules were set in stone on moving horizontally and vertically there would be no adjustable hitches allowed.
Also, the drawbar would not bend on a DMI, they are about 1-1.5" thick and are built pretty beefy. I have a hitch adapter that converts a drawbar to a 2" receiver that would probably work well for the dhra rules too.

well that drawbar is pretty strong, it's designed for pulling, now granted...loads on the road, b/c it cushions the push and pull of the trailer with those springs that go along side of the tongue.

I can't remember the actual weight #'s for it, but I will def. look it up.

I do know at our local truck pulls a few others have been using this hitch, these are usually local farm trucks. that's why I have the DMI...works amazing when hauling grain carts or any type of trailer really.

If you do use it try to make it so it does not have any spring travel in that hitch or you will bounce sooner or later. Brace it solid best you can.

the springs are for supporting push and pull, not up and down movement

Exactly, think about when the truck jerks a little and that sled is still back there. You can try it but I don't advize it. Good luck.

i pulled with ISP with one tho its the reese style the mount below the bumper. the is a rules meeting next sunday ill ask and get back to you. i know i have seen some old gassers use them but not a diesel. where are you located?

That system looks pretty pricey to risk destroying it on a sled pull. might be okay at the slightly above stock HP levels but IMO it would get shreded at the higher HP levels, especily if it gets to bouncing as mentioned above.

I bet DHRA allows it as the crowds love carnage :)

Awesome, if you could ask that, that would be a huge help! thanks. I am in Yorkville.

Well cost isn't an issue... since I have reused this from my previous Chevy trucks...destroying it? I dont know...

how often are any other hitches destroyed?

well if DHRA and ISP allow it...I'll be a guinea pig and see what happens.:rockwoot:
