I have heard that if you are going to pull with a 47RE in 2nd it is better to start it out in 1st then shift it to 2nd. Is this true? Why?

I don't have enough power to go to drive so I pull in 2nd, plus I'm running 3.54 rear end...

i pull in 3rd low with my truck just put in drive with the od off works good for me 2nd low if its a power track

I do know that on the older ones like whats in the 12v trucks you want to shift manualy, if you put it in second it starts in second. On the newer ones like mine i leave it in second and it starts in first but shifts pretty quick. Thats what i've been told...........you can control ur shift points better if you manualy shift as long as the tranny shifts when you tell it to on the newer ones.

I can't pull in drive with OD off... it falls flat on it's face.

AND I also know.... it wasn't a good idea for Dirty Blonde to shift manually, as she fried the 2-3 clutch pack, so I'm not sure that's the best idea, but what do I know.

I've done about 16-18 hooks and done well in 2nd, or haven't done horribly anyway lol

I can't get any wheel speed on the tracks around here in D so I had to drop to 2nd... I do need to get a lockup switch installed though... But my trans should be locking in 2nd I believe.. i have a video clip of me pulling last year in D. I did ok, but not too great. The next pull I went to pulled in 2nd just let the trans shift itself, and I won the pull....

I only do a few hooks a year at local pulls, but might get into a few more if I can find some without having to drive too far...

My video last year pulling in D in the 7500lb modified diesel class:

Not the best video... But you can tell it lost power and shifted down at the end...

Does yours shift from 1st to 2nd automatically?? or does it start and stay in 2nd??

Well this has been a debate that I've seen on threads before, but to my knowledge... it shifts.

Then again, my knowledge has been questionable before LOL

I pulled 2nd 4low the other night on a power track. Manually shifted 1,2. Then I tried to hit 3rd and it started to bog so I down shifted to 2nd. 4:10's and 33's. I think on a looser track I could have taken 3rd gear...

I always pull in D-low with the O/D off so I can manually lock the converter. Most dodge trannys can't lock up unless they are in D.
