Putting it back together with fuel economy in mind...

Some of you probably saw the thread about my melted pistons. Well, the motor is all apart, and I need to make up my mind on what to use when it goes back together.

Erick and Reb are going to kill me if I put my truck back together 100% stock, so I want to build it back up with fuel economy in mind.

The Brown's have convinced me to run 03-04 pistons, nozzles, and ecm -- better piston design, + the early common rail trucks are known for getting better fuel economy without the 3rd injection event.

I need everyone's input on cam and nozzles for best fuel mileage.

Thanks,

J.P.

depends on how you want to build it you could do a big stick HD cam with a set of 50 or 90 ddp with a set of fast spooling twins.
the build depends on what kind of driving you do and what kind of hp you still want to make.

Smog regs are coming to CA, so the under hood appearance has to remain unaltered. I'm going to use the stock turbo, and don't care about h.p. -- just mileage.

Mostly highway driving, and towing the 1st gen around on the weekends.

I don't see why we can't swap nozzles for you with some of Don's mileage tips. We'll figure out what to do about the messed up nozzle. Toss in a H2 cam and rock it with a stock or stock modified turbo. Put the Smarty in for some timing.

H2 cam, probably go with Erick's advice on the injectors but IMO I would only go with one turbo, get rid of your twins. Save you some money for something else since your running the first gen as a puller now......

Go with a overbore piston and ring package, CI makes more TQ and TQ ='s MPG.

I would square the deck and head, do a simple MA valve job, and leave the stock cam in place. Stock 03-04 nozzels get great mileage as is, coating the pistons top and bottom will help to reduce friction and keep combustion temps on top of the piston, where they belong.

A true cylinder bore along with main, and cam align bore/hone will make a bigger difference than most realize. coated bearings wouldent hurt, but not needed. ballenced rotating assy to +/- 1 gram or less is best.

File fit the rings for a gap on the tight side of spec to reduce cylinder psi loss on compression and power stroke, and go with higher CR pistons. use the ring break-in power as well, this will seat the rings early, promoting good mileage quicker. This is a great starting point for your best mileage engine build.

The nozzle is probably ok. I have to keep the smarty, I'd be sad without it. Was the H2 cam the one guys were seeing +2mpg with?

Thanks for the advice! I'm planning on doing everything you said. However, i'm not 100% sure I'll be coating the pistons.

Cool, when they are built like this , they will live and perform very well. a similar set up we built is a 04' CR with 26 MPG AVG, bone stock internals. Not much for performance upgrades installed, just exhaust and pressure box.. So far 215k on the engine, i built this in late 05'. Yes it's a dually.
