Question on governor spring studs.

I have a question.

I have read multiple posts stating that you cannot use the measurement of the protruding governor spring studs to set governor spring tension or at least to balance them with the same tension. Are the studs REALLY this imprecise? In my experience I have found nothing involved with the P7100 to be imprecise.

Its not to say they are imprecise, its poor practice to use an unknown anything as a datum. The stud protrusion on all my pumps vary from one to another. This becomes even more evident if you happen to be changing shims. You need to account for any idle spring shim change to get it to react properly. Going by the spring tension/click method, that is built in. To say that you should set your stud protrusion to 0.050" is not going to be a rule, as my stud protrusion on my 12v stock was around 0.080". With the Weston 3k, it was 0.100". IIRC, the pump on my 24v was in the 0.060" range. I've quit measuring them since then. Much easier/quicker to count the clicks.

I use both, measure and count clicks, on some pumps you can go initial plus 2, some can go to 3 and protrusion is usually .050-.060, I go to three on my 215 pump but it causes it to very slightly hang at 1600 coming down, the slightest load with cure that, I call running on the edge and will only do that to my own stuff.

To many variables when using stud protrusion. I use spring tention and clicks. I use what ever im using to tighten the spirings and press on the spring retainer to see how tight they are. Its all about the feel

I take the protrusion only as a reference in case of problems setting the springs so that I can go back to stock if need be. Only time I had an issue counting clicks ended up being a stuck shim hiding at the bottom that the magnet didn't grab. The setting for protrusion was split between clicks on that pump.

I've always had trouble doing clicks because it's hard for me to feel the initial click, so I never know if I felt it at the same spot as the other spring.

Also, how are you measuring spring tension? Please don't say by hand, after just saying that micrometer and stud protrusion is to imprecise LOL

How do pump shops balance them?

The problem with the stud protrution is that unless you are putting the exact same set of springs back into the pump there are variances in the different manufactors spring height so the protrution can vary. if you use clicks it takes the height out of it and yes i use by hand feel. Ive done a far amount of springs so i can feel how tight they are.
