I will be putting a set of the TrXus STS tires on the rear of my truck.

There are 2 sizes offered, 33x12.5x16 in radial
AND
33x13.5x16 in bias ply.

I've heard that bias can be a better tire for pulling, what everyone's take on this?

I have also heard that the bias plys are better. I would take it that the cepeks and other pulling tires are all bias ply? or am I wrong. Its been years since I last talked about the difference of the two and honestly I forget the characteristics of each. I to was looking for some STS's for mine. (Looking to put them up front) and also saw the Bias ply were 33x13.5's

A radial tire will leave more of a foot print when aired down and under load vs. a bias ply tire due to construction of the tire itself, A radial tire also offers more flotation. A bias tire only loads the center of the tire due to its construction as a radial flattens out good over the tread of the tire. Got this from http://www.michelinag.com/agx/en-US/products/advantages/bias_radial/bias_radial.jsp

I ran the bias ply ones , they do not sqaut down very well when aired down. but they have deeper tread and wider viods in the tread if you look at them compared to the radails

i asked this same question on TDP but could never get a straight answer, i figured that bias ply would respond better to air pressure changes.

i have seen both the bias and radials and the bias have much better sidewall and bigger voids in the tread grooves while the radials tighter tread and less sidewall bite, but have a deeper tread than the bias.

i would also like which way to go on this

The Trxus specs show the radials having a tread depth of 16/32, while the bias ply has a tread depth of 19/32.

The Bias Ply's also feel softer to me I will get the old Durometer out and get some readings.

I don't think added tread depth will add much benefit pulling on hard tracks though. Might even hurt as the tire can flex more.

I have used nothing but Radials, wouldn't the radial also help limit bouncing a little?

Good call, I think they would limit bouncing.

Scott- Would have hated to see you running the Bias ply tires then at IRP the other year!!! I actually was under the impression that your boggers were bias.

I dont know i have the radials and i bounced alot... but a duramax had the same tire but bias and didnt bounce at all, so... one thing i dont like about the trexus if you ever felt them they are very soft the footprint flexes and when you get them spiining fast they do a "springboard" action and i was big on these tires till i got them and there not the greatest in my opinion just a bunch of pullers had them and then everyone else followed line. the best tire i had on my ford was a good ol bridgestone all terrain diamond cuts. they were stiff and never jump they just hooked up and went! but every truck is different so....

Do they even make a bogger in radial?? Last time I checked they didn't. Every time I get in my mud truck it has massive flat spots in it. Makes me feel like I've driving over logs at 55mph.

I'd have to go back and look but IIRC one is only available in an 8 ply and the other is available in both 8 an 10. What's everyones take on this, 8 or 10?

My bad I forgot about the boggers, I didn't run them at IRP the year I bounced like a yoyo :) I ran a brand new set of the ole Gene specials back then MT Baja RADIAL MTX and chose to large a gear :(

Bias tires are usually known for there sidewall strength and durability and the radials strength is across the tread. I come from rock crawling where the best tires out there won't even cut it as street tires due to the soft compound they're made of and they're not DOT approved. Boggers are bias, bias is what they started out with. They do make radials and some like the Irok, which are offered in both. I was curious if anyone pulling uses the Irok's? Oh yea, that flat spot is common with bias tires and it happens even when they sit overnight, they go away with a few revolutions :D I'm curious as well as what tire works the best, radial, bias, tread pattern, etc.
