If I ditch my IC for an Air-water set-up do I need to have a fan pulling air across the radiator while pulling. I'll eventually set up some e-fans but I am wondering in a 300ft pull if its gonna get hot enough to need a fan on the rad.

i would put just a couple cheap electric pullers behind the radiator.. Something there is better than nothing. you'd be surprised how hot the coolant would get when it is circulating that fast without any heat dissipation. Full load, max horsepower, 4000+ rpm, and 8-15 mph..... i think it would get really fukking hot!

I think something would be better than nothing, but I don't think you'll have any issues:

Thats why i swithed to the selanoid and just had a toggle to trun them on when i needed them which was only if i was running a/c in town or towing through slowmoving stop and go traffic.

Also 'the boss' is running a dryblock in the superfarm tractor and we can do two pulls before the block temp gets up to 200 degrees with only 5 minutes or so of idling before pulling.

j, while this may be true.. TJ has the stock bottom end in his truck.. Dry/ filled blocks are built to much looser tolerances...

TJ -

Are you going to be letting the truck get up to operating temp before hooking or is it going to be less than that or?

i run a coolant bypass now, it circulates coolant from #6 back to the rad whenever i open the valve. i let the truck run until its up to about 150ish and then open the valve. it will still get to 190 on a hard run but it recovers very quick with the mechanical fan still on there.

if you really want to leave the mechanical fan on there you can. That'd be fine. I thought you wanted to get rid of the fan.

I sure hope your going faster than that. If you want to be in the hunt up here its more like 27-29 MPH.

Back to the question at hand I tried pulling last week with no fan. The first run was ok but about an hour later I hooked again and the truck boiled over on the way back to the trailer. I am putting the fan back on in the morning before going to hook.

I think he meant ground speed not wheel speed? I would do atleast some electric fans of some sort, no air flow over the radiator will get that engine too hot IMO.

well i guess it depends on the track.... i'll have to put an airspeed meter in my truck to see how fast I'm going. LOL

Yes you need fans. I went this setup Derale 16927 - Derale High Output Rad Electric Fans SummitRacing.com

I bought it on clearence at the summit store for $150 Some aluminuim angle to mount it from Home Depot and some self tappers. Works great.

I run the Derale Dual rad fans, but don't turn them on until AFTER the hook to cool down the engine. My engine temp is below 190 after I am done pulling.

Also, I can get anything Derale, so let me know what you want to get TJ.

I got mine from Garrett and I love them, bout half the price of Flex-o-lite and just as good. I run mine on during and after the pull, I also hard wired them so if I desire, I can shut the truck down and leave them on ( I also have the E-water pump also from PDP). I have a air to air IC hence the running them during the pull.
ps. the Derale fuse blocks are no good, they looked like little plastic puddles after 10 min or so. I got the best NAPA has to offer and no more problems.
