Random Hot No Start?

Im working on a 98.5 24v that has a random hot no start. Had a p1698 code in it, which is communication loss between the ecm and vp. The truck always starts when it is cold but when its hot it sometimes will not start. Has a new lift pump on it. We have a cummins vp44 test module that basicly eliminates the truck side of the wiring and it started every time for me with that plugged in. Any suggestions?
 
Sounds like the VP is toast. A no start when hot is a classic sign of a dying VP.
 
All that tester does is show that the pump is not siezed.

It does not show if the electronics are failing / failed.

It is probably the VP. Sorry.
 
Alright, been pricing vp's. Through cummins dealer cost is over $1500! Any other good places to get one at a better price?
 
Thanks guys. I got a pump from Midwest fuel injection. Put it on tonight and took care of the problem.
