Rattle noise when engine shuts down?

I replaced my VP44 about 2 months ago (I torqued the pump shaft nut to about 170 ft-lbs). I noticed a few days ago that everytime I shut down my truck I hear a rattling noise...kinda what you would expect from a 12V with the KDP that has fallen out, but I have an '01 24V. It makes this noise everytime I shut it down now. Anyone know what this could be? I need to look into it more but I'm guessing its coming from the timing cover area.

When my harmonic balancer took a dump it made a funny sound at shut down.I replaced it with a fluiddamper and the sound went away. The sound that came from my ride was more like a belt squeal.

Yeah that's actually what it sounds like...is it common for these balancers to go bad? I would be surprised because this is a low mileage truck (just turned 100k).

Sorry i cant remember when i replaced mine. All i know it has been at least 3 years.

I listened to it a couple times while a friend turned the key off, really hard to decifer where the noise is coming from...but it doesn't do it at crank/startup. I doubt its a bad motor mount and the engine runs smooth after it starts so I would be surprised if the crank damper is bad. Anyone got any other ideas?

Sounds like your fan clutch maybe? That metallic twang makes me think its your fan.

Or your inspection cover for your flexplate? Or maybe the flexplate bolts are loose, or its cracked? Point being I think it sounds like sheet metal or the sound that your flexplate makes if you hit it with a hammer.

Yeah, to me it sounds like a noise a heat shield would make. I'll try to check out the fan and flexplate today.

Thats not the sound mine made.Sounds to me like a converter bolt or the fan hitting a bolt.

Fan doesn't appear to interfere with anything. I took the inspection cover off and didn't notice anything obvious...but I didn't check the entire circumference of the flexplate for cracks and didn't check the flexplate bolts, I suppose that will be the next step.

I don't think a plastic fan would make that sound....

The flexplate or the exhaust idea both sound like winners to me.
