how far could you go with out the rear freeze plug (and obviously any coolant above that point.) with out causing damage?

well not far, depends how hot you got it. things like to start warping and oil likes to coke up.

Well my idiot brother blew one out passing a car last night and some how didnt realise it. It sat for two and a half hours last night, right after I assume the plug moved or fell out. Then he drove 6 or miles home. He said the temp never went above the hot side white mark but was fluctuating. I just built this thing 1000 miles ago and did the final retorque yesterday afternoon. What should I do.

It had about 30 miles on fresh oil/ZDDP if that helps his cause?

There was not enough coolant in the system for the temp gauge to work correctly, ignore it and look at the oil, is it burnt looking/smelling? Only thing to do now is replace the plug and coolant, fire it up and see what happens.

He said it ran fine when he got home. And the oil looks/smells fine... Should I pull the head? or the injectors and take a look?

Nah, don't pull the head. I would put a bypass kit on instead of putting another plug in there. Then fire it up & see what it is like.

My plan was to get a bypass kit from EEP in the AM.

Yep, that is the kit I have. I like the kit. I mounted it on top of the engine for easy access.

If the truck was cold when he fired it up and driven easy on the way home it should be OK. All depends on how long it was driven after the plug popped out. Fix the leak, return coolant to system and see what you have.
