I put a used ecm on my 02 last week, got it flashed and everything, runs good. I want to mount it in the cab somewhere to keep it away from the heat and vibration of the motor because that is my only guess as to why it quit. Can i just cut and splice in the right length of wire between the harness and the ecm plug to make it reach into the cab??? Gonna mount it behind the passenger airbag which I removed and gutted so there is room there. Just don't know if them wires are just carryin 12 volts or not. Tried to do something like this on a duramax, but it had 48 volt wires or something and i had to buy a whole new harness because you cant splice them kinda wires.

I dont think there would be any problem in moving the ecm in the cab you would just need a wiring diagram to tell you the pin locations and mark the wires you cut to the coorsponding pin locations.
I belive the only 12vdc wires going to the ECM are; unswitched battery, key switch input, and the sae j1708 backbone (correct me if I am wrong I can not find my cummins diagram).
The others are 5V supply for the sensors(one supply supplies multiple sensors), 5V returns, and grounds(usually all the grounds run in to one harness and ground on the block or frame)
Once again I can not find my Cummins hard card if I find it I will post it up for you

Edit: Sorry I forgot you will also have to run aground for the ecm it self

Thanks bud sounds good. If you can find that info, post 'er on up i'd appreciate it! Harness is out, project is underway. i think i'll just mark them real good and start running wire. if my camera don't quit, i'll get some pictures up here of the process in case anybody is curious how it'll turn out.

btw anybody know where to get some of these different color marked wires? I have a bunch of different colored stuff the same gauge, just might see if i can find any of these color combos, might make it easier

I'd put it back now before you turn your truck into a gremlin. I had an ecm go out due to a bad ground. Its not the most common problem with these trucks, but it does happen.

1. Some of the sensors in that harness work off resistance. Changing wire length adds resistance and effects the readings.

2. You need 2" between each splice to prevent the RFI interference with each wire.

3. There is no reason to relocate it. It was designed to be on the engine, they are electronic and will fail on occasion. Moving it to the cab will not decrease your chances of failure.

Dang, alright thanks for the heads up I will put it back i got lucky i guess i hadn't cut into it yet. i didn't have a clue.
