Alright, so I lurk and read on this forum here way more than I post mostly because I dont want to sound stupid lol, but Im having a hell of a time with a good friend of mines truck and am at a loss with it.
My buddy bought a truck about a month ago, 02 HO truck with 110k on it, beautiful clean truck and got a long list of things that were checked on and went over on the truck before he bought it including a reman vp44 and a whole host of other checks. About 3 weeks after he bought it he started complaining about a dead pedal, since the truck has a new vp I figured it was possibly an apps or a fuel issue, thought I would start with the easiest thing first, the fuel filter.
Having a new vp I assumed the truck would have a new filter, boy was I wrong. Not only was the seperator filled with water but there was about 1/4 of an inch of pure dirt and setiment at the bottom of the filter housing and the filter looks like it hasnt been changed in years. I changed the filter and cleaned it out yesterday and than last night the truck died on my buddy. I got it running by bleeding the lines and drove it to my house for today. Today we got another brand of filter cause we found the filter we put in yesterday was about 1/4 inch shorter, replaced filter again and everything looked clean in the housing.
Now the truck will run but than stall out, crank it, starts, than dies, crank it again, than will idle but pop and studder and shake. Im at a loss and its going to an actual shop tomorrow but i just wanna try to figure out what it could be. When it dies it just dies, doesnt pop or studder, just totally craps out. But than will fire back up. The only codes are a 1693 companion code and today a p0500 vehicle speed sensor code popped up while the truck wasnt moving, could it be a sensor issue or dirt inside the vp or lines is clogging things?
I know Comp d usually isnt the forum for trivial stuff like this but this is the only forum I am a part of cause its full of information, thanks in advance and sorry for such a long read lol.

Check the fuel pressure going into the IP. Alot of OEM fuel pumps die with a filter change.

You have either a dead lift pump or an air leak, since you did not mention the pump that will be my first guess. The drain spigot is a known area that can leak air but not fuel, with the filter housing being crapped up there could be some stuff in there keeping it from sealing.

Thank you guys, I actually saw fuel leaking out of the spigot and turned it so it stopped leaking, but when it would pop and sputter I didnt see any white smoke which I always thought was a sign of an air leak? Correct me if im wrong lol, I drove the truck last night and it ran fine until it warmed up than it popped a few times but no where near like what it was doing earlier in the day. And I could hear the lift pump working but im not sure of the fuel pressure because I dont have a gauge to check it. Its at the shop now so im waiting to hear back what it really is.

Got the diagnosis from the shop it was dropped off at, bad injection pump. Guess it either wasnt a reman or was a bad reman pump.

It happens, best bet is to get with the original owner and ask for the paperwork on the pump to see if it is still in warranty.

^ This.

And, for thoughts. I didn't catch if the Original Owner also replaced the lift pump when replacing the injection pump?

I changed a VP on my 99 one time before going PPump. Bought a unit from a driving truck. In fact, the truck was driven to the shop where I helped remove the VP. Put it on my truck, and waxed it in 2 weeks. I never checked the lift pump. I had just bought the truck, and it had a bad vp when I bought the truck. The lift pump was weak. Very weak.
