i know you have to pull the axles out of course, but is there a special tool out there that make getting out the old seals and installing the new ones easier? what have you guys that have done it before do? also do you have to pull the carrier?

pull the carrier. I used a peice of round stock to remove them. (tapped out with a hammer) Then used a 3/4 drive socket, washer, flat steel and theaded rod (custom puller) and pulled them in.

Their are special tools available, or you can build your own. I used a long piece of threaded rod, built a seal driver for one end and made a slide hammer out of it.

Their is literally no way to change them without buying or building the tooling.

Bingo, I used a piece of conduit, threaded it, slid it through, put the fitting on the end, and used it like a slide hammer.

Been a couple years since I did mine but I do remember pulling the carrier and using a threaded rod with a socket on

Can you post a pic of this tool please Dan? I'm sure I'll need new axle seal's when we swap out R&P's.

I don't know if I still have it, well actually if I can find it.
Simple thing though, thread a piece of pipe, slide it into the axle, slide the seal over pipe, thread the fitting on, then go out by the spindle, and use the slide hammer on the other end.

what fitting are you talking about to thread on? i need to replace mine trying to get a idea how to build a tool for it

take a piece of 1/8 round plate the size the inside diameter of ur axle tubes. weld it to a short piece of round pipe thats threaded inside. screw that on the the longer tube u put thru from the end.

I said fitting, I had a piece of round stock laying around, I drilled and tapped 1/2NPT threads in it, slid the pipe through the axle, slid the seal on it threaded the plate on it, and started pounding.

Just make it, make sure it's o.d. is 1/4" or so smaller than the I.d. of the axle tube.

Mine was a lot smaller than that, I am thinking a 3/4" piece of rigid conduit is what I used. It needs to be able to fit inside the ID of the new seal.

my passenger side seal was leaking. I used a piece of 4' long 1/2" round all thread and a couple of 1/2" fender washers. had nuts on each end and pulled the seal into place.
