Why do the 215 pumps have a retard notch? Were they tring to meet/beat emmisions? Is there a secret purpose for them? I think it was white knight who said the notches were good for running nitrous-is that so when the timing retards it reduces cyl pressure so that the added pressure from nitrous wouldn't blow the head gasket? How much better would it run with a plunger swap?

They were designed to reduce NOX at high rack travel/power levels in stock engines.

So at what point should I change them out? And when changing them out, why not go with 13mm plunger and barrels instead of 12mm?

so why not put say 180 p&b's in a 215 pump to get rid of the retarding in say a performance application, not a everyday street driver?

That would prob be fine for the street also. If they are they same size, then the only difference would be higher emissions by not having the notch and I'm sure better top end performance.
