This is probaly a dumb question but i'm working on a 2001 ram 3500 cab chassis 2wd automatic. The reverse lights wont come on for anything. Is the switch on the back of the transmission on the driver side or it a safety neutral switch. Thanks

my hayes manual says that that is a safety neutral switch and reverse light switch, because im having the same issues, but i dont know why if one switch controls two things why both parts wouldnt be messed up, not just the reverse lights

On automatics the same switch controls both functions. The switch is located either on the shift shaft that goes into the transmission or right next to it. Make sure you are getting power to the switch.

My reverse lights worked for about the first 6 months when I purchased the truck new in 02. They haven't worked since. Never tried to fix it and wouldn't know where to start!

Have the same problem. Bought the neutral safety switch to replace it and its been sitting on my dresser sense. Looks like the orig could be taken out and messed with and possibly fixed. Its just a spring loaded dealie that slides back and forward. May just need to be cleaned and worked a few times.

anyone know which prong/wire is what on that switch? Like which one needs power which is backup light and which is neutral safety?

Let me look at the wiring diagram...hold please....

Looks like it is called one for the automatic and called something else for the manual tranny. Real smart. LOL

That doesnt make much sense i thought there was a 3 prong plug on the trans which had wires coming off them for the neutral safety, and the other prongs were for the backup light? I thought the switch was a part of the trans? Is that correct? Do the backup lights send voltage out as your in reverse?

Let me me make sure there isn't a seperate page for the diesels. This is the first page I found. This manual is for an '01 but I've found it to be the same as my '02.

That is the only page I see. Find the joint connector in the PDC (I'm assuming that means power distribution center) and jumper a wire from your +battery to pin 9 or 10 and see if the lamps come on in the back. If they do, you have a problem between fuse 7 and that point, if they don't, you have a problem after that point.

Please make sure you find the same connection as in the diagram and don't blow up anything and blame me for it. :D

If I recall you send a ground to the center prong, and then you would ground the one of the outers to get reverse lights, and one of the others to get neutral/park.

I know I fired mine up the other day and just figured out which one was made in neutral and just grounded it to the frame.

this was for a 97. Might be different.

4x4 the problem i have is i am not using a pcm at all i am just using the plug but does the 12v that goes into the main vb plug power the circuits for the lights or where does it get the power from?

It should come from the big fuse block under the hood, right? I'm assuming that is what they mean by PDC (power dist center) in the diagram. It should be in there.

thats probably where it is but i have a 04 that use to have a 6 spd in it and now has a 47re in it so i need to wire the plug on the trans into existing reverse wire

Oh. Sorry. I didn't notice the switch in year since the first post was about an 01' and this is the 2nd gen forum. LOL My bad. I no nothing about dem new ones.

The trans is out of a 96 but do you know which one of the 3 pins on the trans is for backup

Now you want 1st gen info.... :bang. :hehe: No, Sorry. I only got this diagram for this model. Sorry.

i am fairly positive all the 47re backup light and neutral safety switches in the trans are identical
