running poorly

I have a friend with a Dmax that had been getting bad fuel from a local station.

They drained the tank and put the last bit into a mason jar. The jar is half fuel of fuel and the bottom half is nasty brown sludge.

They clean as much as they could, installed a couple different filter but, it's still running poorly. It has a lope like a big cam and the filter needs to be primed to get it to start.

Can I assume the fuel systems in these trucks are about the same as a Cummins ? What I mean is, could it be a bad FCA causing a lope, do these trucks have crossover tubes from a rail to the injectors that my be clogged?

What do you think..... bad FCA, possible CP3 issues, trash in the injectors. Thanks !

If I were him I would drop the tank and dump it again. Then add some fuel and slosh it around then dump again. Keep at it until everything comes out clean. Dump it out the hole where you would remove the pickup assembly. Make sure to disassemble the fuel pickup as there is a screen at the bottom of the pickup that can be washed clean.

Once thats handled I would connect a electric fuel pump and line to a separate tank and pump fresh diesel up to the motor from the line at the tank and let the return from the fuel cooler empty in a bucket. Run fuel to it until the return runs clean.

Now that everything has been cleaned replace the fuel filter again and hookup the stock tank and prime the system. Put a quart of ATF to about 15 gallon of diesel in the tank for starter. Get it running and run it down the road for 25 miles and see what happens. If the idle is still messed up see about taking the throttle suction valve off the CP3 and cleaning it.

10-4 thanks for the reply. I'll pass along the info.

The sation he sourced the fuel from is responsible for the repairs. Make sure he gets reibursed for whatever he replaces.

You'd think and he's going to try that route. I doubt he'll get anywhere though.

Here's an update..... he's got it on a scanner and it's showing either 3,4 & 5 or 4,5 & 6 ( I forget which ) injectors misfiring. Does this tell you guys anything ?

If it's misfiring it could have already gotten stuff into the injectors. Not knowing what model it is you could pull the high pressure injection lines off those cylinders and see what's inside them. If the brown sludge is in there then your going to need to pull all the lines and fuel rails off and clean them as well. Then say your prayers and hope its not down into the injectors.
