Anyone know any good sources or where I might look for scrap lead to be melted down for weights. Also, whats the going rate for lead?

I'll hit up the guys at our indoor shooting range. They have LOTS of it.

yes definitely try those places where the lead is considered "scrap" to them...if you go and try to buy new lead pellets its expensive and lead blocks go for $1/lb. I know BigBadDodge was saying he spent a small fortune to fill his weight box at $1/lb because he had like 2200lbs in it.

I got mine off an old machine at work it was an RTM machine i got 8 100lb pieces plus a bunch of other people took it for scrap

if you have a forklift scrap yard around go check out some of the stand up lifts for lead weights. but it is hard to beat a tire shop, just call a few scrap yards and see what they are paying.

We get all of ours a a tire shop. But we just use it for target loads for sporting clay loads, not 100's of pounds for weight......

I think there was a listing on Pulloff.com for a bunch of it a couple months ago. Not positive, but I think Decision Maker sleds had it.

20 cents lb around here I have 800+ of lead weights molded into mini IH style very handy , old tire shops best scrap yards are thriple price

roofers usually have some from old pipe flashings on roof tear offs....i threw about 10lbs away yesterday.

Tire shops are prob your best bet. A 5 gallon bucket of old wheel weights is heavier then it looks.

As much as I spent I treat these like gold :(

ok maybe a stupid question but how do you go about melting it down to make pretty little bricks like that? I mean I can't exactly just load up a bread pan and put it in the oven my wife would kill me for that.

Do a google search on lead smelting, and eletric melting pots as well.

I got mine from a place right down the road that sells the bricks, I think smelting might be against codes here, at least that is what I was told, it's not the most enviromentally friendly process :)

we used a propan turkey cooker base then a old pot about 4 handfuls of wheel weights is enough to handle , mine weight 35lbs a peice , its a very time consuming job and toxic , i got 150lbs in a 5gallon bucket
