Hey guys I am setting my timing today. I have the special socket but I can't get the part on the top of the injection pump off.

1) is it left hand threaded?

2) Do i need to take the holder with the two 14mm bolts off first?

ANY help as soon as possible is greatly appreciated

Thanks
Adam

They are tight, so you just might have to put a little more muscle into it than you are thinking.

There is no need to take the two nuts off.

Right hand threads and no need to do anything with the barrel nuts.

Use a cheater bar.....

;)

I got it finally with an electric impact wrench. I had a 3/4 inch breaker bar trying to get it of and it felt like it was flexing the breaker bar. Anyways I got it and I set the timing to a little less than 21* but the truck sounds the exact same. You think it slipped back to 14.5* (where it was before I upped it). I did use break cleaner to degearse the nut and lock washer and the face off the gear and shaft.

Should i be able to hear an audible sound difference going from 14.5-21* of timing?

Thanks
Adam

You shouls be able to hear a big difference going from 14* to 21*. Use electrical contact cleaner, it will spray upside down so you can get it in there and get the shaft better than you can with brake clean. also once you get it all clean put some long bolts into the threaded holes on the timing gear and get it set up there nice with your hands before putting the nut on. Good luck

Alright sounds like the timing slipped back then...well i guess ill give it another try tomorrow. At least I have my marks for tdc so i do not have to find it again.

thanks

From what you are describing, it doesn't sound like you cleaned the tapered part of the shaft that the gear actually contacts. That is what needs the brake cleaner. If it is not clean you can just about guarantee that your pump gear will slip on the shaft.

I know it takes extra time, but I always pull the front timing cover so I can get the shaft and gear cleaned extra good. I haven't ever had the timing slip doing it this way.

Adam, make sure the shaft is clean and you use a new lock washer (there $2) timing at 14 sounds like a normal 12V, 20 starts to hit on the filings in your teeth if you get my drift, any were around 18-20 is the best on the street for spool-up and power.

i went from around 14* to 20* and didnt notice any noise difference i did notice the power range and spool up though.

i took my pump off and sanded the shaft a little to get the extra grip, i know several dont think it is necessary but i dont want it to slip again.

Go to Menards or Ace hardware, and get a M20 lockwasher. Same size as the Bosch washer but cheaper and easier to get.

Well when my dad got home from work we both checked the timing and it is around 19.5* degrees advance meaning it didn't slip from what we measured. It is somewhat noticeable in drive but not much at all when in park.

tater thrower...i torqued mine to 140 ft lbs.

Good to know, haven't seen those there yet but it is allot closer to me too, they do have lots of good stuff there.

160 lbs for T/Q with a new washer and I haven't slipped timing in many years.
