Shift Points...

Ok I know we're limited with defueling at higher rpms with these trucks but I'm curious if there's a way other than the tv cable to extend shift points higher into the rpms. I've been playing with the tv cable a bit and it's seemed to help a little, but it really just seems to shift harder rather than later. I know that's because of the increased line pressure, but I did see an improvement. I'm curious if we're able to get into the trucks computer and change shift points on these trucks or if we're limited to what they are set at from the factory. Not sure if there is a programmer out there that enables this, or if maybe a tech II type scanner would work?

Springs in the vb can be changed to control the 1-2 & 2-3 shift timing but od is controlled by the PCM, and setup to shift at certain mph depending on tps signal.

I installed a ratchet shifter which I use if I'm really getting on it. I like the way I can control 1st and 2nd but as soon as I throw it into 3rd or what would be drive on the console the next shift is almost instantaneous. Then I can control overdrive by hitting the switch when I'm ready to shift. Any way to control that real quick shift in the middle?

I think you are feelin the converter lock??? These transmissions are 3spds with OD, so after you are in 3rd all that's left is TC lockup and OD.

Ya, it would be 3rd gear. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. If I keep over drive on and shift into 1st manually, 2nd manually, then throw it into "drive" or 3rd manually, third gear is extrememly short and then it goes into overdrive. Just feels like I could get some more out of third gear and expand my power band.

Why? It's done making power anyways by 2000rpm.. Let it shift early and the torque will eat..

What mph does it go into OD at?

It goes into overdrive in between 40-45 mph. The reason I was asking was because I'm still running 110 hp injectors until my new ones come in from SDX and once it goes into overdrive without much load on the engine it almost chokes the turbo out. It's not a huge deal, considering it'll be tore back apart on Monday, but I was just curious more than anything. Was just wondering if I could play with the shift points electronically to find what worked best for my current setup.

im kind of interested in this too.... I haven problem with my transmission if i go to floor it it like redlines feels like its free reving but it coming out of OD and going straight to 3rd and catches .. any ideas ? Sorry Im not tryin to high jack ur thread WiLmesbm

mine does a quick 2-3 shift if I lock the convertor in 2nd, so i always manually shift into 3rd.

Not long ago I had a '01 Sport auto that shifted very well and even when not taking off very quick it held 1st and second gears until nearly 2000 RPM. Often didn't shift into 3rd until 30-35mph. Shift programming on it was darn near perfect for my tastes. It was a stock truck when I got it, no idea why it shifted so nice, the '98.5 I just picked up is your typical aggressive shift-to-3rd-by-20mph deal.
