Is there any way to cut X amount out of the factory plastic fuel tank and somehow "weld" the pieces back together to make a shorter tank?

There are places that modify plastic tanks, but I've never done it myself. I've used a plastic welding kit with ABS filler rod before, but wouldn't trust it to something as critical as a fuel tank. I have heated my tank up with a heat gun though and reformed its shape to fit around the mitchell gear splitter.

What is your motive for shortening it? Gear Vendor / U.S. gear?

It'd probably be cheaper and safer in the long run to find a new tank that fits than to modify the old one.

Ramcharger tank fit the bill?

Gets more weight over the rear axle. Just an option, I don't know what you're trying to fit where...

I just need to make it shorter height wise. like how it hangs below the frame 3 inches, I need to cut it and shorten it so it sits above the bottom of the frame so I can avoid dragging holes in it when I go offroading all the time. I would like to build a skid plate for it that is level with the bottom of the frame.

Hmm... Well, if you cut the top off and plasti-weld it back on, then that wouldn't seem as critical or dangerous a modification.
