Swapping out the input shaft to billet after 1300 miles or so on rebuild and when we tore it down the front band was smoked and flakey, the drum was purple.WTF! It looked to be adjusted correctly and I was not having any known issues. It was all new billet when rebuilt. What have people been running as far as the adjustment out of curiosity.$200 down the drain.:kick:
Wanting some input on this.

I run the factory adjustment(72 in/lbs 1.75 turns backed off). Too tight can be a bad thing. Make sure the anchor isn't cracked or the strut isn't bent.

I did my own 727's starting in 1973 and would do 2 rounds out with a 5.0 lever.

I believe most of the diesel shops run something closer to the 4.0 lever.

True.

This does not change what I run my band adjustment at though. 4.2:1 lever and 2 turns out from snug.

what is snug to you? cause 72 in*lbs of torque is almost nothing.

Snug is just what it sounds like.

I learned long ago that all Chrysler was trying to do with their 72 inch pound spec was give a spec for people to shoot for. If they didn't do that people would have cranked the things down way too tight before they backed them off. People just need to learn to use a bit of common sense.

The intermediate band is a shifting "clutch" so it is better to leave it on the loose side than the tight side IMHO. I've seen factory Chrysler specs range anywhere from 1.75 turns out to 2.75 turns out. I really don't see band adjustment changing things much, although you might see a bit of variance in the 2-3 shift timing depending on how it is set.

They actually do torque them at the factory to 72 inch lbs, then back them off 1.75.

I don't doubt that one bit.

Everything gets torqued at my place of employment too, whether it is technically needed or not. It removes the human element and interpretation of how tight is tight enough. On an assembly line, you don't want uninformed people making the decisions about what is acceptable or not.

Outside of the production environment things are different. I know seasoned trans builders who never even bother checking clutch clearance with a feeler gauge because they have been doing them for years. Same with bands and other things.

Well it is rolling again 1 3/4 out from snug and it shifts softer 1-2 shift although not sloppy.

Unless you had the adjustment way out I can't see that causing your problem. Is is possible that your front servo piston has a leak? Also what kind of band strut are you running? I would do an air pressure test on the servo piston to rule that out first.

I always back mine off 1 full turn from spec.

I wonder if there is a low pressure problem?

Is the light sprin on the TV lever good, and in place? I broke spring causes problems.

The shop that did the rebuild had it tight I think.Did not find any other issues.
