SO & HO VP44's?

When I picked my used CTD in Texas it was throwing VP44 codes so they put an HO pump from a newer used truck that had no codes on it.

Shortly after I got the truck home I put a FASS pump on it. The swapped in HO VP44 lasted about a year...we ended up putting a SO pump back on the truck, it's the 215hp motor and I instantly noticed about a 50hp drop. It was a definate seat of the pants drop that you could feel. The truck was an absolute slug so I added the SMARTY and got back a little of the spunk back in it.

I understand about the plungers being bigger in the SO pump and that folks with higher HP motors & setups like them cause they flow more fuel.

Two questions:

1. Are all SO trucks rated 215hp or was there a 235hp version as well before they went to the 245hp HO?

2. Does a stock HO VP44 on an SO motor/ecm make more power or was there probably something wrong with the HO pump they swapped in that made it feel like it made more power?

My SO was 235hp rated. I'm 99% sure that all SO vp's were rated at 235hp. I don't THINK any were rated at 215hp. The 98 12v's had a 215hp p-pump on them.

The SO will lose some bottom end but will make up for it on the top end. I ran an HO pump on my SO for a month (my truck is an auto) and the truck had a LOT of timing rattle and was much peppier on the bottom end. Top end was definitely lacking though over the SO pump I was running.

From 98.5 to 00 the automatics were rated for 215hp. The 5 speed trucks were rated for 235hp.

To my knowledge, there is no difference in pumps between the 215 and 235 trucks. Only injectors and ECM calibration.

i have a 98.5 auto and factory it had 235. there are no 215 24vs. early 98 12vs were rated at 215 horse. theres either 235 SO 24vs or 245 HO 24vs

No it didn't, and yes there were.

Craig, what was the name of that little company you used to work for, seems like I have heard of them before, Cummins was it?

:hehe: I have no clue about what I talk about on here. Please feel free to argue with me. LOL

The '02 5-speed trucks are also rated @ 235hp.

Right, all vp44 5 speeds were 235hp, automatics from about 00.5 (if I remember correctly) were also 235hp and that's also when they started with the torque managment. And of course the 6 speed 245hp came out in 00.5, in very low volumes, then more in 01 and 02.
