Softer engine starts

I recently bought a '01.5 and have my first 24-valve in 7 years. After having a 3rd Gen and two 12-valves the instantaneous starts took a little getting used to again.

This truck seems to start up more aggressively than my other '01 and '98.5, like it fuels it harder even though it's 100% stock. Get a real puff of smoke and it revs to like 1000 for a split second before dropping right to the normal idle RPM.

Any ideas on damping down the startup so when I get bigger injectors/box it starts a little more calmly? ie like somehow put something on "the wire" to reduce voltage momentarily? I know goofy question LOL

Did you buy the truck used? When i fire up my truck when its warm my hotrod pump will cause an aggressive start not as bad as yours but there is a noticeable difference.

Yeah bought it used but pretty certain it has the original or an OEM VP44, truck was totally stock except for 4" exhaust.

my 01 did that same thing when i had my sovp. I didn't care though it ran for two years like that then all at once i did the hrvp injectors lines and tubes... talk about a puff of smoke at start up:lolly:

My Stock 02 HO did the same thing. Instant starts and small puff of smoke. With bigger injectors the puff seems to get bigger. (naturally)

Interesting tidbit I noticed. When bumping the starter, to run the fuel pump or what ever, by the 3rd bump my truck will start.( if it's warm out)

It is amazing how fast a 24v will start.

No not throwing codes, I know it's normal just thought it would be interesting to try to do the revers of a fueling box and redue the fuel solenoid voltage slightly for less aggressive starting.

kazairl your technique might come in handy when trying to start with a weak battery.
