Speed sensor

Does anyone know what the speed sensor at the rearend does????? I know it doesnt control the speedometer. I unhooked it today and the speedo still worked. I am just wondering cause i have a code for no rear speedsensor signal.

I guess i should say its on a 02.

I believe it's for the ABS.

Kindof what i was thinking. ABS and brake light are on. But i put a new sensor in there.

On my 99 truck it did have something to do with the speed-o. The old sensor would make the speed-o not work from 0-20mph and would make the tranny shift weird. After replacing the sensor, the truck ran fine. BTW... I did have a ABS light while the problem occured.
