Sport Headlight question

I'm seriously thinking about upgrading to the sport headlights on my '01 Dodge. I was going to do the wiring myself and thought while I was at it I would duplicate the "brightbox". The problem is that I'm not 100% sure what it exactly does. So here's how I want the bulbs/filaments to light up:

Lowbeams:
9004 low = on
9004 high = off
9007 low = off
9007 high = off

Highbeams:
9004 low = on
9004 high = on
9007 low = on
9007 high = on

Does that make sense? I'm worried about the extra heat. Will burning both filaments in each bulb burn them out or melt my headlights? Here's the schematic that I drew up. Obviously there would be one of these for each side of the truck.

When I drew this up, it was originally for just the left side, so "LL-4" means "Low filament, Left 9004 bulb".

I think that I would also like to have the factory driving lights to stay on with the highbeams, only when the knob is pulled on from the dash. In other words I want to still be able to turn the driving lights off when I want to. Does anyone know of a way to add that to the mix? I probably just need to know how the driving lights are switched from the light switch and from the dimmer switch.

I think you got the idea for the most part. My cousin wired up a set on his ram but I dont remember how and he is running highs and lows at the same time when on the trail. No over heat problems or melting.

Burning both filaments on the same bulb will shorten its life considerably. The 9007 bulb is the lowbeam and the 9004 is the high in sport headlight. What think the trick would be is this.

Get a 9004-9007 adapter and a 9004 and a 9007 HID kit. Double HID lows and HID highs. Just use a plug on each side to trigger the HID harness for the respective kits. There is a relay you can bypass to get the driving lights on low and high but with what you will have you wont need them anymore. I dont even turn mine on with the HID kit in the standard headlight I have.

I think I want to stay away from the HID's. They seem a little too bright to me when I meet someone on the road with them. That's also behind my thoughts on just burning one low beam filament when using low beam.

How much faster are we talking about burning out the bulbs, percentage wise?

On the driving lights do I just find the relay and jumper across the switched contacts (as opposed to the coil contacts of the relay)? Then that will let me control when the driving lights are on or off?

Well the heat is what takes them out. On high beams I would imagine alot of heat would be created. I dont know a percentage amount. Another idea on the Hids would be to activate the 9007 Hids normally but have 9004 HID low come on with the 9007 high. Bascially switch the 9004 hi wire to the low wire. You could also do that with regular bulbs. I think that would be more light than you need without the extra wear of activating all the filaments.

I've re-thought my lighting scheme some. I think that I want to try having all 4 (2 on each side) low beam filaments on for the low beams. Then all 8 filaments on for high beams. If I go through the bulbs fast, I'll just rewire it. And yes, I'll carry some spares in the glovebox!

So what does everybody think of my low beam idea? Do you think that I will be getting other drivers flashing their brights at me?

I tell people that the front of the truck will turn night to day while the back turns it back to night again! :hehe:

I don't have the sport lights, but I have mine to run both high and low beams when they're on high. I've burned out 1 bulb in 65k miles running like that. Not too bad if you ask me. But like I say that's with the regular lights, not the sports.

I have a schematic in the "dodge how too" on this.

Just use the factory wiring to the 9004, the use it to trigger the relay for the 9007. That setup uses the 9004 as a single filament in high and low beam mode, the 9007 uses both filaments on high beam and none on low beam.

You can interchange the 9004 and 9007 bulb connectors to use as you wish to set which bulb is in the lamps 2 sockets.

If that makes sense.

Thanks, I saw that. Actually that's what got me thinking about this swap. I like the schematic, but I want to utilize these bulbs to the max. In other words I want every single filament burning on the high beams. Now I'm thinking that I want to burn all 4 low beam filaments for the low beams, not just one set of bulbs. I was thinking that your schematic didn't quite do that.

Any thoughts about if burning all 4 low filaments will be too bright for the "low beams"?

My new sport lamps should be sitting at my door when I get home today.

Any thoughts about burning all 4 low filaments being too bright for on-coming traffic?

I have the SUVlights wiring harness with my sport headlight setup and it runs all four low beams at the same time; it also runs all four high beams at the same time when on high. I love it as I seldom use the high beams as there is always too much traffic for that any more. Have had them installed for a year now and have not burnt any bulbs. The difference in lighting up the road with the low beams is impressive compared to the stock setup.

Nice. Do you notice any more people "flashing" their brights at you, thinking that you have your brights on when you don't?

Have never had that yet in the year I have been running them, to my surprise I must add. I cannot believe what a difference it makes in lighting up the road, especially in poor weather conditions where it can be hard to see the painted lines. It's probably one of the best mods I've done on my truck!

Good deal, I'm going to try to get this done today then!

did you convert to the sport headlights?

I have a sport and need new headlights and want to upgrade the wireharness at the same time. Wondering that harness off their site you used. i might just break down and make my own harness.

If you already have a sport, you should consider making your own harness, as theirs is designed for the non sport trucks converting to the sport headlights. I got their harness for convenience, but in your case it would be financially sound to make your own, as you would have to get two harnesses from them to make your lights work. Good luck!

i have an 01 non sport cummins and was wondering what the actual difference is maybe im having a brain fog because i've also had an 01 sport and dont recall..... however, i did order a brite box and new headlight bulbs that came ''free'' with my line of fire... i am hoping to gain brighter light too not to hi-jack anyones thread just wondering the difference to clarify what your project is...

The sport models have Two headlight bulbs on each side compared to one on the non-sport. The sport models also use a 9007 bulb which is a better bulb desgn than the standard 9004.

I see... makes sense now thank you haloman... I guess I will continue to have lame headlights because I doubt I'll do the swap... just gonna hook my brite box up and put in my bulbs and see what I get!
