So what's the general consensus on these? I know most run regular 5" tubing but I'm thinking about building one of the square or rectangular crossover tubes. What size do people generally use? It'll have 5" pipe coming in to it and twin 5" stacks. I'm thinking 3"x5.5-6" tubing. Or would 6"x6" be preferred? I'm thinking black flat top stacks would look pretty sweet.

when i had 6inch duals i had a 6x6 inch box for mine it looked really clean and mine bolted to the bed and stacks were welded to the box

The last set we put together was for a lightly modded truck, we made a 3x4 304 stainless box and it looked awesome, my smarter partner did the flow numbers and said the box would flow very close to the 4" under the truck, so we ran with it. We mocked a set up with 5 to dual 5's and I dont see any problem, I can set you up with my fab guy here if you want, he could tell you the specifics, he's building a bike right now, but after ROT he should be free.

It sounds different then with a Y-pipe, but yeah the few people ive known that have run these have used 6x6 square pipe to make. Then you can either weld the stacks right to the box or get one adapter and cut that in half and then weld it right to the box and the clamp the stacks just like you would with a Y-pipe

I'm seeing guys making them from mainly 3"x6" tubing. Guess I'll price out both and see which is cheaper.

What about putting a 45* cut on the ends to help with the flow? I've seen a few people doing that.

I'm still up in the air about welding the pipes directly to the crossover or using adapters. I may want to go to 6" one day (this will be my 5th exhaust set up LOL ) so I'm leaning towards no adapters.

How thick of a wall should I make the crossover pipe or does it really matter?

I've been using a piece of 4" tall by 6" wide rectangle tubing for the past few years. I used 4" pipe on a previous truck and the square tubing definately acts as a resinator. I would definately go the square tubing route, its cheaper too!

4X8 tubing on two trucks, makes a nice resonator. We had the tubing is the only reason it's that big.

So the square/rectangular tubing acts as a resonator as well. Sweet. I'm gonna have my 5" hushpower muffler on these as well so it should sound pretty sweet and not be loud inside which is exactly what I want.

What wall thickness is preffered? I'm thinking 1/8"-1/4" to help keep the heat in. Depends on the pricing I guess. What about something like 1/16" or 18ga? To thin?

it definately smooths out the tone a little bit, and it makes building stacks much easier IMO. I prefer the sound of a Y pipe setup, but there's nothing wrong w/ a box.

I go overkill and fab up a nice curved divider piece for the inlet, angle cut the ends, and weld 5" ID stubs to the box. Then you can swap between different stacks easily

I used 1/4" wall because I could get it free and you don't have to worry about it getting banged up in the bed, but you could use pretty much any gauge

Stacks are gay Tyler...remember that:hehe: :hehe:

This is not making fun of anyone's setup personally...I just hated the stacks I had because every time I started the truck, I had black crap all over it:p

Chris

Your gay LOL.

I must be calling the wrong places but I've been quoted no less than $100 for a piece of scrap 3"x6"x8' 1/4" wall. The guy flat out told me he can't use it but I can have the whole piece for a $100. I know there has to be some place in Austin that sells 1/16"-1/8" tubing for cheaper than $100.

Scrap yard Tyler. They usually have a junk pile with pieces of pipe etc. somewhere.

I used a chunk of 6x6 square tubing that was actually a chunk of guard rail we had laying around. I have five inch pipe into it and five inch stacks out. I really like the sound it is alot deeper and is very mellow in the cab to drive. Here is a pic

Jamie that was my next place to call. Called 15 different tubing stores, no one has 3"x6" or 6"x3" and nothing thinner than 3/16 for $15-20/ft. They all chuckle though when I tell em what I'm using it for. LOL

Whats your address? I'll send you a piece of 6x6 square tubing that I removed from a customers septic tank cleanout.:hehe:

Are you kiddin' me? Quarter wall? Jemony Chirstmas Clarke. I'd recon that if you had dual 5 inch stacks which would be a total of (19.6 in^2 * 2) 39 in ^2 that any rectangle tube that had at least 49 in^2 cross sectional area would work. $.02

Jamie thanks but I think I'll have to pass. Don't feel like having flame throwers on the truck LOL.
