starter bad maybe?

im having a problem with my truck not cranking. i was in town yesterday and stoped at one hardware store and its started fine just like it always does. i stoped at another store, shut it down and went in. came out and tryed to start it and it acted like the battery was dead. would crank slow then click. i wiggled on the cables did nothing. i went to see if someone could jump start me and then it started fine. the ground cable to the motor was really hot and smoking. but the others going to the frame and body were fine. then it started fine last night, just like it always did. then today i went to start it, then it did the same crap. the cable goin to the motor was hot an smoking. would the starter be shorting out or something? help me out guys, im stumped.:bang

you night want to get a new one of those. if its corroded at one end the acid can travel down cable and ruin it.
 
i always cleaned then with baking soda and water. the cables look like new. i even took it off and it still dont do anything. im thinkin that the contacts are junk in the starter. im goin to pull it tomorrow and see.
 
you have them in stock in marshfield? i could just drive down there.
 
Crud, I had 2 of them, one I shipped out Thursday and the other we installed. I would have to check when my next stock order is coming in, I could have one shipped to you for free otherwise :)

well its not the contacts. they look fine. the start motor itself is grounding out somehow. looks like i will be getting a rebuilt starter. woo-hoo more money!!!!
 
problem was my factory one the contacts were good in it but the motor went to hell. so i just got a rebuilt one, now this ones $hit.
 
dont know yet. got to call my parts guy to see how long the warranty is or was.
 
well i guess i was over the one year warranty by a couple months. so i bought a brand new one with a lifetime warranty! starts awesome!!!!!!
