strange noise in trans....

driving to an auction today and in 5th gear my trans is starting to make a wired, scratching noise....i had the 5th gear nut put on and it has a valair clutch....it ONLY does it in 5th, also when i accelerate ONLY in 5th the transfer case shifter will move back, then when i let off move back to normal position..i am stumped...i can try and up load a video but its strange, it is a scratching noise. like somthing is loose and scratching. thanks guys
 
I dont think i would make a video, i would be taking it out ASP unless u have plenty of cash! U will do more harm than good.

I never had a problem in 5th but one time and the truck just losed the gear (cheap fix) Locking nut.
 
Pull the transfer case and driveshafts. Then you can take the rear cover off the trans and see whats making the noise. Be the fastest way to see whats up.
 
yea i had mine loose 5th gear, so i bought the speical nut for it that locks it to the output shaft.
 
You may check out the transfer case. Make sure fluid is full, bolted down tight , etc.
i may not be trans making noise.
Also make sure tranny fluid is full too.
 
If u drive it again. When u hear the noise push on the tranfer shifter like ur putting it in 2 wheel drive, and pull it back in 4 wheel then back to 2 wheel!

My dads 12v made a noise sometimes out on a open road in 5th (dont think iv heard it at slower speeds) and u could mess with the 4hi to 2hi and it would stop.

But it isnt a scratching sound more of a roaring sound, he rebuilt the tranny a month or so ago and havent heard it seens. I think it wasnt in the tranny though (maybe something on the linkage out adjustment) who knows but it may do it again because it only did it a hand full of times that i now in bout 8-10 months.
 
well i tore apart the transfer case and my imput bearing was shot, i mean missing half the bearing...think i found my noise haha
