ok, after my rebuild, i have an annoying sound coming out of the rear of the motr that i cant figure out.. ill start with saying that we had to hone the 6th cylinder out quite a bit, but i dont think thats the issue cuz i have dang virtually no blowby.. there is the usual smoke coming out of the tube, but no oil. the motor has about 1500 miles on it now. the noise sounds like a dry lifter, like a cack-cack-cack sound.. it is really bad when you first start it up, like theres no oil back there, then it goes away for a brief moment, then comes back, but not as bad as when its started. this is driving me nuts! does anyone have any idea of what it could be?? oh and i do have a street cam in this along with 110lb springs and HD pushrods if that makes any difference.. thanks in advance for the help!

Good luck and let me know what is it when you figure it out. I've had my truck making the same noise for the last 8 months. It sounds like a gasser motor with 0 oil pressure. My truck is a 99 with 235k miles, and the noise is worse in the morning or when the truck has been sitting for a while. BTW... nice truck

Did you just hone out #6 only? If so, its probably tha cylinder on a different compression ratio than the rest, throwing the rest of the motor off balance.......or something like that.......

Crazy- ya i finally got that stinkin leak fixed, lol..

Sleepin-Sport- thanks man! you got a nice ride too!

and those are some things i thought about, the honing making the comp ratio different... and if it was piston slap, would it get louder as rpms get higher?

ok, valve lash is ok, but tomorrow ill triple check everything just for piece of mind...

i wonder if the new gaskets i used are what causing it? they were made of a material similar to what cummins uses now for the gaskets that go between the intake manifold and the heater grids.. i dont have any black around any of the ports on the exhaust manifold tho... and i double checked those, all tight.. i have an extra set of rocker arms, bolts and what not i might just try swapping out this weekend..

well, i hope im wrong, but the way my luck is, i am probably 100 percent right... i went and started tinkering with the truck awhile ago, and went ahead and adjusted the rockers again, this time 8 intake, 16 exhaust... the number 6 exhaust rocker was a little loose, but not enough to really cause any weird stuff to happen.. fired it up.. and same thing, clack, clack, clack... went away shortly, then came back but not as loud.. drove down the street and it was pretty noticable.. i also loosened the wastegate elbow a little on the bullet, and that really helped out i think! it spools a little faster now and seems to run a little better. but still have that dang noise.. im starting to think the worst and say its piston slap. oh, next time i mention that im rebuilding a motor, will yall please remind me to NOT listen to a retard that thinks he can build motors!!!:doh:

ok, i have one more question.... could this sound be from too much mechanical timing?? my dad and i were talkin earlier today, and he thinks this could be why its making this noise. the cams specs that i have are 103* advance timing, and then i stuck a 3* advance key in the gear... think this may have something to do with it??

i cant think of anything that would go away as it warms up or goes away with rmp.............good luck let us know when you get it lined out!!

check your starter bolts. somehow mine wiggled loose and were makein all sorts of racket. worth a shot at least.

id be willing to bet that its somethin simple like that......but for my luck itll go clunk and take out #6 :nail:
