So I've got the opportunity to swap my 62 for an sps66. I've talked to a couple of people that said I should have no problem spooling this turbo (66/71/14) with my cam and bigger sticks that I'm about to get. But I'm still a little leary on that. I'll have either 7x.012's or 7x.014's, adrenaline, 181/210 bigstick cam, valve springs, scotty 2 intake, and 5" exhaust.

Second, I've read 4 or 5 threads on putting a 3rd gen turbo on to a 2nd gen (this is coming off of a 3rd gen) but I'm seeing and hearing some conflicting data. I've heard that you do/don't have to change the wastegate arm, you can clock the compressor housing to make it work/you have to fab a pipe to make it hook to the intercooler, the turbine housing has to be changed (coming from II direct). So what's the real story? I know bigblue24 did one but he also did some welding and stuff on his. I don't think I'll have to do anything crazy like that. What about the wastegate arm? Will I have to get another one or not?

Those are the only two issues stopping me from getting this turbo. If I can convert this thing to work on my truck for cheap and easy then I'm gonna go ahead and get it. The extra air would be nice for the bigger sticks.

I tried putting a 3rd gen 62/65/14 on my brothers 98.5 & it wouldn't work. The wastegate hits on the oil drain & needed to be changed out. I called II & they swapped me a 2nd gen housing for my 3rd gen no problem. You will have to get a 2nd gen compressor housing & 2nd gen wastegate to make that work. As far as the outlet, I've used 3rd gen outlets [turbine housings] on my truck as well as my brothers truck to accomodate 3rd gen brakes. If you know someone with a 3rd gen stock downpipe, just cut the flange off & weld it on your 2nd gen downpipe. You will need a 3rd gen exhaust elbow to mount to turbo. I have one off of a 04 model [3/12" outlet] but you still need the flange from a downpipe to adapt.

For your hp level, I would recommend a HX35 turbo.

Sadly I don't nick otherwise the wastegate would be a moot point.

Jamie, that's a lot of work. Damn. I was hoping it would be easier than that.

you can just get a gate actuator from ED

but you'll still be fabbing a downpipe and cold pipe... I'm not even sure you'd like the 66 either.

I'd hold out for a 2nd gen version IMO

I agree with Forrest.....could go with the actuator and be fine

There is someone that makes the cold pipe for this set-up but can't remember off the top of my head....I came across a similar deal...I would skip this route.....just me though!

Ya. I'm not in the mood to do fab work on a free turbo. I called II about swapping housings and they said $200 so forget that. Oh well. Thanks yall.

Sure is, I've done 2 trucks now so I'm kinda quick at it. It takes time getting the flange lined up just right before welding it to the downpipe too. Enough to make you cuzz at it. I would trade someone for a 64/71/14, you'll be much happier. I do have a 3rd gen 64 housing new in the box, but no second gen stuff.

Ya. Guess the 62 will have to handle the new sticks. LOL

It won't be as bad as you think. My M5's were perfect for my 62/71/14 until I got over 3500rpm, then it got hot fast. I was sitting at 534hp with that combo. It should have no trouble cooling down 400hp.

Just gotta keep getting the jabs in LOL. I'll have a 1 day old injection pump, 3 day old injectors, and a cam to be dynoed on the 13th. I'll be damned if that don't get me over 500. LOL

I sure hope it goes over 500.....if not, I'd fire your mechanic.:hehe::kick:
