So i have read a bunch of threads on this but none gave clear info. I got a 02 24v with a 6 speed manual 4X4 it has 160ooo miles but i have a 96 12 valve that i am thinking about swapping in, it has been siting for 2 years now outside covered it has 170ooo miles in it came out of a 2wd my question is can i do this swap with out buying anything. I know that i might have to buy a wiring harness out of a 12v (do i need that right away or is this just for the gauges?) Will everything else bolt up. I have also heard of doing the p-pump conversion on the 24 valve but i just dont want to spend much money. Reason for the swap is that I work on the oil rigs in northern Canada and my truck can not brake down where i have to tow it as sometimes that would be a 2k bill witch leaves me in the need for a really good and reliable wheels. My last truck was a 98 12 valve 4x4 5spd it got me too 550ooo miles then i took the fuel plate out and moved the afc and 1000miles later it died where it has been ever since in the middle of nowhere but all this talk about the p-pump conversion got me thinking of going back for it. Also will the 02 turbo bolt up to the 96. thanks

You can do the conversion using the stock 24v wiring. Although you may have to swap some of the sensors from the 24v into the 12v engine. The 12v uses a magnetic crank sensor on the harmonic balancer. I know the 24v's have a cam sensor on all of the 24v, but some years also had a crankshaft sensor in the block or timing cover. The 24v cam sensor will have to be used in order for the alternator to charger using the 12v engine. Not sure if the tachometer uses the crank sensor or cam sensor in the 24v harness. You can buy an adaptor piece to use the 24v cam sensor in the 12v timing cover, but you will also have to swap the 24v cam gear and tone ring onto the 12v cam for the sensor to work.

I know the motor mounts may be different between the 2 as far as how they bolt to the engine, but the placement on the frame rail mounts should be the same.

The 02 turbo will work on the 12V aswell, although you may need to run a boost line to the AFC on the p-pump if the original boost line is tapped into the original 12v turbo. Some have the boost line running into the intake plenum on the head.

Hope this helps. I'm sure there maybe a few other things I have missed.

thanks kino fab that helps a lot .Can i use the motor mounts of the 24v on the 12v or the other way around or do i have to buy some fabricated ones for the conversion, and is there a way to go around not swapping the cam gear, i read a while back something about using a relay of some sort for the alternator to work is that possible. Basically i know eventually i will get to 98 12v that broke down on me so iwill steel the dash and harness of that truck but for now that has to wait and i have to work with what i got i do also have the harness of the 96 i dont know if that helps at all probably not.
thanks again for the reply

If you swap the cam gear to the 24v gear, you should be able to use all the 24v harness and sensors (minus the APPS and VP), just like in a p-pump conversion. Your '02 doesn't have a crank sensor, so its all based off the cam for charging/tach/AC/etc. I'd say buy an aftermarket cam, swap on the VP cam gear, and throw it in the 12v and let it buck. You'll have to grind out the hole a bit for the cam sensor to read properly. Read more in the 24v p-pump section.

12v mounts will bolt to a 24v, but not vice versa. Placement is the same, as stated earlier.

That was really detailed and lots of pics sweet , nice to see those Alberta plates. So i am gathering that the cam gear has to be replaced and a vp cam gear wont bolt up onto the 12v cam is that right ,thats why i need the aftermarket cam. And as far as engine mounts the 12 v will bolt right into the 02 witch is sweet . Thanks for the info . i see you got the 98 24v p-pumped why is the other 98 12v 6spd VP'd ?

if you want to shoot me a pm ive got a 97 12v in my 01 ho-6 speed truck ill tell you what i can and have a few parts to help you through it no light on in dash all guages work.

so it seems that my post count has to be bigger than 10 for me to be able to send you a pm odieub lol ill have to wait till then but i will be sending you one soon thanks

interesting

doing a ppump swap but am interested on keeping the check engine light off sent a pm to odieub. thanx jake

Its a Tate joke, his 12V still has the Pee pumper. The only way you don't have a check engine light on if you remove the cel light from the dash. I just put in a 12V (02 block, 12V head, 370 pistons and so on) into a 98.5 24VP 5 speed truck.

Whats wrong with the 24V engine?

The earlier 12V engine, the block is different than the 02 block, only one turbo oil drain.
