i have a late 03 dodge cummins auto with 271d trans case. The t-case is making noise and the fluid is black. i am concerned about putting a replacement back in and having similar issues. currently puttingt 420hp to ground and am aiming for 700+. any help would be appreciated.

The 271 transfer case is pretty strong. The number one cause of them failing seems to be fluid related (lack of, poor quality). The 271 doesn't hold much fluid, so being a little low can be a big problem. I put a 271 in my 02 when the 241 failed, and have put about 750 1/4 mile passes on it without a problem. I am making about 640hp.

They seem like a beefy unit, I have one in both my pulling trucks. Van Haisley says they don't hold up as well as the 241DHD's though.. Not sure about that.

I broke my 241DHD last year pulling and upgraded to the 271 case with a rear flange (instead of a slip yoke). You get an additional bearing at the rear of the tailhousing to help support the shaft as opposed to the bushing in the slip yoke style case.

I have an extra 271 with a rear flange if that is route you want to go. We could possibly work out a deal if I get your old one... Shoot me a PM if you are interested.
