06 dodge and the tach will drop to 200 rpms and the engine sounds fine and idles normal. It reads ok at higher rpms. I hear that it is either the crank sensor or the tone ring. Any advice? will it affect the timing and hurt the engine? The truck feels strong. Thanks

Mine does something similar except it will be off by 200 RPM either high or low, or some times right on. I have heard that it might be the instrument cluster also but have not tried to fix it yet because it is not effecting performance any.

More than likely, it's the cluster.

If I remember right, you can perform a cluster test by pushing and holding the odometer reset button as you turn the ignition key. All the gauges should sweep. If the tach doesn't sweep, the stepper motor is probably bad and you will need a cluster.

My truck has had two clusters when it was under warranty, now I need another.

It is a common problem with the 06's. I know a few guys replaced the tach motor and it works fine now. Never opened up the cluster so maybe the tach is tied into everything and you have to replace it as a whole.
