Alright so I have my timing cover off to fix the kdp and I am swapping injection pumps due to an engine miss. And the motor needs to be at TDC to set the timing on the pump. So I was planning on doing the drop valve method until I found this.

So do all 12 valves have these zero markings on the cam and crank gears to indicate TDC?

everything else looks good. both valves closed, timing pin in its hole on the cam gear...

Yes they all have those marks but putting the pin in the crank like you did will get it closer. Dont forget about gear lash. Now is the time to advance timing if you want to because you can get the pump shaft super clean to prevent slippage.

yup thats the plan, trying to get the engine running great before it goes in the 1500

What is gear lash?

What is gear lash?

Just the small amount of play between the pump gear and the cam gear. Its best to get your pump timing where you want it, pass up TDC with the gears, and then go back to it so that it removes the backlash in the gears so that your timing is spot on. Otherwise that small amount of backlash can slightly retard your timing since when the engine is running, there is no backlash because the cam gear is driving the pump gear. It doesent have to be done, but in order to be spot on with your timing, it helps.
