What good is RPM if you aren't making good power there?????

Just asking..... Also, if you drag race and your truck never sees over 3500, even though you can turn 4200, can you beat a truck that cannot turn 3600?

The 3rd to OD shift falls flat if you have a box that starts falling on its face at 3200 RPM. I run 115-116 MPH with a Drag Comp and 118-119 MPH with a ADR back when I was running a 4k tune. I attribute that to the truck not falling on it's face on the 3rd to OD shift. Most people wire a switch (me included) to force OD before this event happens, but it's very hard to time just right. I think I may have actually timed it perfect only a hand full of times. :bang

One thing I noticed when I hit the rollers last weekend was the pull I made in OD. 118 MPH = 3200 RPM with stock size tires.

but it'll free-rev to 4k tim..................

-or-

my data logger says 4214rpm..........

-but-

what kind of power are you making there??????????????????:bang

You arent making much power up there but you need the rpm off the line when pulling to run a big gear so you keep rpm in your power range goin down the track.

I believe the topic at hand is drag racing.......

My feelings with the vp trucks is work with the power curve that you have and re-gear the truck.

Thats what I wonder about.
By reving a truck to over 4grand, how is it effective when it makes power up to say 3600?
Im just trying to learn more about this topic since im not the smartest guy out there.

the diesel engine makes torque... a lot of it... use the torque. shift right after power peak and hope you land right above torque peak. then as was stated use gearing to help you out in this aspect...
thats why the shift into O.D. is important, or locking the converter down low to try to use torque.
personally i know my engine will never run 4krpm unless i have the head cam and proper fueling for it...
just my 2 pennies
