Thermostat issues

I haven't had any luck searching so here it goes... Ive been working on a friends truck and ran into a thermostat problem. The truck is a 94 3500. My first attempt was with an autozone t-stat and it as to big so i read on here to use a factory t-stat. The next problem is that the cummins t-stat does not fit into the housing and wont make contact with the outer seal. This truck did not have a thermostat in it to begin with so i had nothing to compare it to. I found an inline thermostat in the upper radiator hose. I have "packaged" everything the way the cummins and haynes manuals say but haven't had any luck. Any suggestions?

ur housing doesnt look right they are not that small

thats what i was thinking. I've got two others to try from in the morning. Casting # is 3923474. This engine has been a pain from the word go. I could right a book on the problems it had.

yea only use cummins thermostats sounds like someones put a motor in it

The truck belongs to a welder. I wouldn't trust him with a bottle opener

It looks like that housing has a restrictor in it instead of a thermostat. I'm not sure if that could be a housing for a different application or whether someone put that restrictor in it, have you tried to remove that piece?

No. I think its part of the casting. Ill have to look closer

it looks like restrictor ive got one that looks similar to that on my puller.

Can you remove the restrictor or do you have to get a different housing

Well, my curiosity was getting to me. I went out and took another look at the housing. I grabbed a small lasts foot pry bar and gave a quick tug to the housing an out comes a plate. Problem resolved! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
