The person I bought my truck from moded (drilled) the t-stat so it would run cooler (155-160*). The only way I can get it to 190* is when I'm towing up a small grade in OD with egt's in the 1200's.

What worries me is that while I'm not towing the hottest the engine ever gets is 160, and i've always heard it's best to get the engine to operating temp before running high boost.

Since the motor is going to run hot (egt's) most of the time, what would be the best thermostat..? should I leave it this cold (don't think so..?) or would a 180* or 190* work best?

you will get better mpg at operating temp. mine came with a 180 and i run a 190 now.

if you tow a lot get a 180.

Just wondering if anyone has the part # for the 190* T Stat?

I changed my T Stat out about a year ago and I bought the 180*. The 180* was around $40 and the 190* was around $60.

I moved to Alaska last week so I figured the 190* would be helpful.. kinda cold here and all.

I have one coming in tomorrow from Cummins and it was only $36. He only listed the 180* for my 98 but I had him look it up for an 01 truck and he found the 190*.

Interesting every t-stat i've bought from Advanced or Napa has been 190.

190* Stant p/n# 14289

mine got stuck open and replaced it, it was a 190 truck runs much better in the winter now

Interesting fact...

The 190* no longer exist from Cummins. All the 6BT/ISB trucks use a 180*.. part # has been revised and the old part #s are no longer.

Might just get one from Napa even though I have been told the aftermarket T Stats aren't that great.

I got mine about a month ago from DC and it's a 190* t-stat (came in a cummins part box). List price was around $75-85 but I got it under my buddies commercial account for $50. I'll see if I still have the part# when I get home.
